Pinterest emerged from an earlier app created by Ben Silbermann and Paul Sciarra called Tote which served as a virtual replacement for paper catalogs. This includes recipes, home, style, motivation, and inspiration on the Internet using image sharing. Pinterest is an American social media service for publishing and discovery of information in the form of digital pinboards.

The term “hallucination” as applied to LLMs is distinct from its meaning in psychology, and the phenomenon in chatbots is more similar to confabulation or bullshitting. These limitations may be revealed when ChatGPT responds to prompts including descriptors of people. ChatGPT’s training data only covers a period up to the cut-off date, so it lacks knowledge of recent events. OpenAI acknowledged that there have been “instances where our 4o model fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency”, and reported that it is working to improve safety. The user can interrupt tasks or provide additional instructions as needed.

On March 23, 2012, Pinterest unveiled updated terms of service that eliminated the policy that gave it the right to sell its users’ content. Some, including Nature and JAMA Network, “require that authors disclose the use of text-generating tools and ban listing a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT as a co-author”. OpenAI said it has taken steps to effectively clarify and address the issues raised; an age verification tool was implemented to ensure users are at least 13 years old. ChatGPT has never been publicly available in China because OpenAI prevented Chinese users from accessing their site. ChatGPT also provided an outline of how human reviewers are trained to reduce inappropriate content and to attempt to provide political information without affiliating with any political position. ChatGPT gained one million users in five days and 100 million in two months, becoming the fastest-growing internet application in history.

The Pro launch coincided with the release of the o1 model, providing unlimited access to o1 and advanced voice mode. In February 2023, OpenAI launched a premium service, ChatGPT Plus, that costs US$20 per month. To prevent offensive outputs from being presented to and produced by ChatGPT, queries are filtered through the OpenAI “Moderation endpoint” API (a separate GPT-based AI). Users interact with ChatGPT through conversations which consist of text, audio, and image inputs and outputs. It is designed to generate human-like text and can carry out a wide variety of tasks.

This ensures that the followers and activity for the teen safety account remain hidden from the public. In addition to their minimum age requirement of 13 years old to create an account, Pinterest has a default setting for all teen accounts under the age of 16 to be private. Pinterest offers teen safety options when creating a profile or account for those aged 16 and under.

• The user can interrupt tasks or provide additional instructions as needed.
• In May 2016, Pinterest acquired mobile deep linking startup URX to help accelerate its content understanding efforts.
• ChatGPT also provided an outline of how human reviewers are trained to reduce inappropriate content and to attempt to provide political information without affiliating with any political position.
• Lawyers should consider disclosing AI usage to their clients and acknowledge a rapidly shifting set of AI capabilities.

Kevin Roose of The New York Times called it “the best artificial intelligence chatbot ever released to the general public”. Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) is a large language model developed by OpenAI and the fourth in its series of GPT foundation models. Later reports showed the bug was much more severe than initially believed, with OpenAI reporting that it had leaked users’ “first and last name, email address, payment address, the last four digits (only) of a credit card number, and credit card expiration date”. Shortly after the bug was fixed, users could not see their conversation history.

Agents

According to the 2023 Comscore report, the audience of Pinterest users are known to be 70% women and 30% men. Pinterest has largely appealed to women, especially with its early user base. Pinterest claimed that, as a consequence of Google’s changes of November 2021, “U.S. monthly active users coming to Pinterest from the web, desktop and mobile web declined around 30% year over year”. In October 2016, the company had 150 million monthly active users (70 million in the U.S. and 80 million outside it), rising to 175 million monthly active users by April 2017 and 250 million in September 2018.

Boards with multiple ideas can have different sections that further contain multiple pins. Pins saved from one user’s board can be saved to someone else’s board, a process known as “repinning”. These ‘clean rooms’ allow Pinterest’s ad partners to utilize first-party data for personalized ads without having to share the data with Pinterest. In December 2021, Pinterest acquired the editing and video creation app Vochi. PayPal’s board and management decided later that same week to back away from a potential deal. Later in April, chief financial officer Todd Morgenfeld announced plans to spend more money on marketing in order to offset a potential slowdown in activity as the United States economy reopened with more people getting vaccinated for COVID-19.

The service is currently accessible through a web browser, and apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 PCs. In 2021, the site announced its new Creator Fund, with the stated aim of trying to support creators and their ability to monetize their efforts to preserve engagement and interactions on the platform. It also collects data that depicts the percentage of change within a specific time to determine if a product is more popular on a specific day during the week or is slowly becoming unpopular.

ChatGPT’s Mandarin Chinese abilities were lauded, but the ability of the AI to produce content in Mandarin Chinese in a Taiwanese accent was found to be “less than ideal” due to differences between mainland Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese Mandarin. For more common languages, AI translators like ChatGPT did better than Google Translate, while for “niche” languages (Amharic and Tagalog), Google Translate performed better. The languages tested were Polish, French, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, and Amharic. ChatGPT (based on GPT-4) was better able to translate Japanese to English when compared to Bing, Bard, and DeepL Translator in 2023. In 2023, OpenAI worked with a team of 40 Icelandic volunteers to fine-tune ChatGPT’s Icelandic conversation skills as a part of Iceland’s attempts to preserve the Icelandic language.

Promoted Pins are based on an individual user’s interests, things done on Pinterest, or a result of visiting an advertiser’s site or app. On the main Pinterest page, a “pin feed” appears, displaying the chronological activity from the Pinterest boards that a user follows. The vegas casino app home feed is a collection of Pins from the users, boards, and topics followed, as well as a few promoted pins and pins Pinterest has picked. With data privacy a large concern for online platforms and their users, this partnership is an effort to stimulate ad business on the platform while keeping its user’s data safe and in compliance with new data collection regulations. The app is aimed at allowing users to live-stream on its platform and use different devices for different angles while live-streaming on the Pinterest platform. Following this, In May 2022, it was announced that Pinterest released a new video streaming app “Pinterest TV studio”.

The laborers were exposed to toxic and traumatic content; one worker described the assignment as “torture”. To build a safety system against harmful content (e.g., sexual abuse, violence, racism, sexism), OpenAI used outsourced Kenyan workers earning around $1.32 to $2 per hour to label such content. These rankings were used to create “reward models” that were used to fine-tune the model further by using several iterations of proximal policy optimization. In the case of supervised learning, the trainers acted as both the user and the AI assistant. The fine-tuning process involved supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).

In The Atlantic magazine’s “Breakthroughs of the Year” for 2022, Derek Thompson included ChatGPT as part of “the generative-AI eruption” that “may change our mind about how we work, how we think, and what human creativity is”. Samantha Lock of The Guardian noted that it was able to generate “impressively detailed” and “human-like” text. As before, OpenAI has not disclosed technical details such as the exact number of parameters or the composition of its training dataset. GPT-5 was launched on August 7, 2025, and is publicly accessible through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and via OpenAI’s API.

One such workaround, popularized on Reddit in early 2023, involved making ChatGPT assume the persona of “DAN” (an acronym for “Do Anything Now”), instructing the chatbot that DAN answers queries that would otherwise be rejected by the content policy. ChatGPT is programmed to reject prompts that may violate its content policy. But, because the approximation is presented in the form of grammatical text, which ChatGPT excels at creating, it’s usually acceptable.

In early May 2012, the site added automatic attribution of authors on images originating from Flickr, Behance, YouTube and Vimeo. Pinterest allows users to transfer information; intellectual property rights come to play. Pinterest users cannot claim safe harbor status and as such are exposed to possible legal action for pinning copyright material. In June 2022, Pinterest announced its definitive agreement to acquire San Francisco based AI-driven fashion shopping platform, The Yes. On August 23, 2016, Pinterest announced that it would be acquiring the team behind Instapaper, which will continue operating as a separate app. Another work focused on studying the characteristics, manifestations and overall effects of user behaviors from various aspects, as well as correlations between neighboring users and the topology of the network structure.

Copyright

In the 2020s, the rapid advancement of deep learning-based generative artificial intelligence models raised questions about the copyright status of AI-generated works, and about whether copyright infringement occurs when such are trained or used. Over 20,000 signatories including Yoshua Bengio, Elon Musk, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, signed a March 2023 open letter calling for an immediate pause of giant AI experiments like ChatGPT, citing “profound risks to society and humanity”. In August 2024, the FTC voted unanimously to ban marketers from using fake user reviews created by generative AI chatbots (including ChatGPT) and influencers paying for bots to increase follower counts. In July 2023, the FTC launched an investigation into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, over allegations that the company scraped public data and published false and defamatory information. A shadow market has emerged for users to get access to foreign software tools. Stanford researchers reported that GPT-4 “passes a rigorous Turing test, diverging from average human behavior chiefly to be more cooperative.”

• On March 23, 2012, Pinterest unveiled updated terms of service that eliminated the policy that gave it the right to sell its users’ content.
• Users interact with ChatGPT through conversations which consist of text, audio, and image inputs and outputs.
• GPT-4, which was released on March 14, 2023, was made available via API and for premium ChatGPT users.
• The individualized formulation of the app makes it not very social; instead, it serves its pursuit to discover, develop, and refine personal interests.
• Over many iterations of ChatGPT, plus users maintained more access to better models than the free tier provided, and access to additional features like voice mode.

OpenAI’s outsourcing partner was Sama, a training-data company based in San Francisco, California. These labels were used to train a model to detect such content in the future. ChatGPT is based on GPT foundation models that have been fine-tuned for conversational assistance. The ethics of its development, particularly the use of copyrighted content as training data, have also drawn controversy.

Business pages can include various data, topics, and information such as prices of products, ratings of movies or ingredients for recipes. In October 2022, Pinterest announced that its video-focused “Idea Pins” feature has included the ability to add popular tracks from top artists from licensing deals with Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell Music, Merlin, and BMG. In August 2016, Pinterest launched a video player that lets users and brands upload and store clips of any length straight to the site. It was originally called the “Pin it” button, but it was renamed in 2016 to “Save” to try to make the site more intuitive to new users. Users can follow and unfollow other users as well as boards, which would fill the “home feed”. Pinterest consists mainly of “pins” and “boards”, where a pin is an image that has been linked from a website or uploaded.

It has two versions, one running in a virtual machine in the cloud, and one where the agent runs in the cloud, but performs actions on a local machine connected via API. In 2025, OpenAI added several features to make ChatGPT more agentic (capable of autonomously performing longer tasks). This tool allows a user to customize ChatGPT’s behavior for a specific use case.
